There are two types of USB cables. The main difference between the two is that one is capable of transferring data at a faster rate than the other. The first type, USB 2.0 cables, has a transfer rate of 480 Mbps. This may seem like a lot, but that’s only half the 1 gigabit per second speed that the newer version can achieve. Software developers might not notice any difference yet, but they will in time.
The second type of cable, USB 3.0, has a transfer rate of 4 gigabits per second and is compatible with all devices which have this specification (e.g., tablets, laptops). It’s also backwardly compatible with USB 2.0 devices so it won’t prevent you from using USB 2.0 cables with your USB 3.0 computer.
